Fathers’ Day.

What I learned from my biological father was that if you persevered with me for a few years you would eventually discover that I was not worth loving.

What else I learned from being his offspring was that I am the shit that happens. I am the collateral damage that no one needs to be concerned about because it had to happen for the greater good to be achieved – ‘Shit Happens’: don’t worry about it.

What I learned from my step-father was that you don’t have to be someone’s biological father to be their dad.

What I learned from my husband was that you can grow up without a father and still be a bloody good one yourself.

The saddest thing is that the second two lessons will never cancel out the first.
